Dr. Nugent offers patients anxiety free dentistry by the utilization of Sedation Dentistry. There are varying levels of sedation dentistry but the goal is the same: to ensure that patients will be completely relaxed throughout their dental appointments.
Candidates for Sedation Dentistry:
- High levels of fear and anxiety thinking of the dentist.
- Want fear and anxiety free dentistry.
- Have had traumatic dental experiences.
- Hate needles and shots.
- Hate noises, smells and tastes associated with dental care.
- Difficulty getting numb.
- Afraid and embarrassed about their teeth.
- Complex dental problems.
- Bad gag reflex.
- Very sensitive teeth.
- Limited time to complete their dental care.
- Bad back makes laying in dental chair uncomfortable.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
This is a great method to help patients relax. A nose piece is placed over your nose and you will breath in pure oxygen and nitrous oxide. The nitrous oxide makes you feel euphoric and relaxed. Furthermore, the nitrous oxide depresses the feeling of pain while keeping you in a conscious state. Once Dr. Nugent completes the dental treatment you will be placed on 100% oxygen that flushes the nitrous oxide out of your lungs. You will have no hangover or sedative effects and are able to drive yourself from the office.
Conscious Oral Sedation
Oral Sedation (a pill taken by mouth) is safe and convenient. This sedation is more effective in delivering a deeper relaxation state than nitrous oxide. At Dr. Nugent’s office you will have initial vital signs taken. Then you will take your pills. In forty-five minutes to an hour you will be very relaxed and possibly even sleeping. Dr. Nugent will perform the dentistry. A great advantage of oral sedation is that the medicine has an amnesic effect. Thus, you will most likely not even remember your time in the dental chair.
For patients with extreme phobia, Dr. Nugent is licensed to combine nitrous oxide with oral sedation.
