Sedation dentistry is closely regulated by the state of Texas. Dr. Nugent utilizes mild sedation and moderate sedation in his office.
Mild Sedation — is the lightest form of sedation dentistry and is often used for patients with mild anxiety, longer procedures, or more complex situations. Nitrous oxide inhalation (laughing gas) is used. It results in relaxation during treatment. You remain awake throughout the entire procedure and are able to breathe on your own. The nitrous oxide makes you feel relaxed and comfortable. Once the procedure is over you will breath pure oxygen and this flushes the nitrous oxide out of your lungs. You are completely reversed from all sedation affects and are able to drive.
Moderate Sedation — is used for patients with moderate to high levels of dental anxiety and fear. For this level of sedation, you take pills in conjunction with nitrous oxide. You will remain awake throughout your procedure, but will be in a deep state of relaxation. Most patients fall asleep because they are so relaxed. Patients must have a parent, spouse, or friend drive them home after the appointment.
